Nowadays it seems like most people have a smart device in their home. When deciding to set up these devices it is good to know that they designed to set up and forget. You have to make sure that you are familiar with the settings and features to ensure that you get the most use out of them and maintain your security and privacy.

When selecting smart devices for your home, consider the following tips:

  • Compatibility: Check if the device is compatible with your existing smart home ecosystem, such as Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or Apple HomeKit. There are many devices to choose from, but not all of them communicate well with each other. Additionally, you may find that some devices work exclusively with a specific smart home ecosystem. So it is a good idea to decide which one you want to use, and then make a point to determine, in advance, if the new devices you purchase will work with the choice that you have made.
  • User interface: Look for a device with a user-friendly interface, such as a mobile app or voice commands, to easily control and customize settings. Just like in the previous tip, not all devices have the same features. Most will have a mobile app. But you do not want to have to download a new app for every devices you add to your home. If you can integrate a device into the current ecosystem, you may be able to use one app to control everything.

  • Security: Ensure that the device has adequate security features to protect your privacy and prevent unauthorized access. Become very familiar with the security features and set them up correctly. Also, remember to only share the access to these devices with people you trust, and those who will keep up with the security standards you set.
  • Energy efficiency: Choose devices that are energy-efficient to reduce your energy costs and carbon footprint.
